President Anura Kumara wins hearts and minds in Velvetithurai, Jaffna
In a powerful address to the people of Velvetithurai in Jaffna, President Anura Kumara outlined his government’s strong commitment to the upliftment of ordinary citizens and the unification of Sri Lanka. The President emphasized his goal of eradicating poverty through education, stating, “I want to educate your children to eradicate poverty in my country,” a declaration that was met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Unity for the Nation
President Anura Kumara expressed that his government, elected by the common people, is dedicated to uniting the country, rather than dividing it. He posed the question to the people: “Do you want to divide or unite?” The crowd resoundingly responded, “Unite!” In line with this, the President announced a national event to celebrate Sri Lankan unity in October, reinforcing his vision of harmony across all ethnic and regional boundaries.
A Government for the Ordinary People
Addressing the longstanding issue of elite dominance in Sri Lanka’s politics, President Kumara remarked that the country had been governed for decades by political dynasties prioritizing their own interests. He emphasized that ordinary people now have the opportunity to govern and care for one another. “The NPP government is an ordinary people’s government, and we will look after the needs of the ordinary people,” he assured, recognizing key figures like Ramalingam, Kumaran, and Ruben, who helped organize the rally.
Addressing Rural Poverty and Education
The President highlighted the difficulties faced by rural communities, including inadequate access to schools, roads, and housing. He outlined several government initiatives aimed at tackling these challenges:
Education Support: Increased subsidies for Aswesuma, providing Rs. 6,000 per school-going child for educational expenses.
Small School Welfare Program: Additional funding for schools with fewer than 300 students, providing Rs. 6,000 per student.
Recruitment of Teachers: Addressing the shortage of teachers to ensure quality education.
Development of Jaffna Library: Allocating additional funds to improve the historic Jaffna Public Library.
School Shoes for Poor Families: Offering Rs. 3,000 to children from low-income families for purchasing school shoes.
President Anura Kumara emphasized the importance of education in overcoming poverty, urging parents to invest in their children’s future for the prosperity of their families.
Economic Development and Job Creation
The President also focused on economic growth and job creation, announcing the establishment of three new industrial zones in Kankesanthurai (KKS), Paranthan, and Mankulam. These zones are expected to generate thousands of jobs for young people. Furthermore, President Kumara invited the Sri Lankan diaspora to invest in these zones to support the nation’s economic development.
Additionally, the government plans to recruit 2,000 new police officers, encouraging Tamil youth to join the police force and increase regional representation.
Resolving Land Issues and Infrastructure Development
The President addressed the long-standing land disputes in the Northern Province, vowing to return land ownership to the rightful owners. He also outlined plans for significant infrastructure improvements, including road development, expanded public services, and protection of fishermen’s rights in Sri Lankan waters.
A Commitment to Political Integrity
President Kumara reiterated his commitment to transforming Sri Lanka’s political culture by eliminating luxury and corruption. He pledged that presidential palaces in multiple locations, including Jaffna, would be repurposed into universities or cultural centers, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to serving the people over indulging in extravagant privileges.

The President assured the people that the era of neglecting the poor is over. He called for a collective effort to contribute to the nation’s development, promising that the NPP government would prioritize economic growth and job creation, paving the way for ordinary people to prosper.

In concluding his speech, President Kumara reiterated the importance of unity, stating, “Our strength comes from unity. Together, we will build a just, prosperous, and corruption-free Sri Lanka.” The crowd’s enthusiastic response signaled their readiness to embrace change under a government that truly represents the people.
