The Sri Lankan government has requested that the public update their mobile phone SIM card registration and ensure that the details are accurate. This is in preparation for the introduction of a unique identity card that will be used for future taxation and other government services.
The government has warned that if people do not update their SIM card registration and make any misuse of a SIM card, they will have to bear the responsibility for it.
To check the details of individual SIM cards, people can dial #132#. If they find that there are any additional SIM cards registered under their national identity card number, they should contact the telephone company that owns the SIM card and get it registered in their name.
The government believes that the introduction of a unique identity card will help curb corruption and boost tax revenue.
