UNP and SJB: Can They Ever Get Along?

UNP and SJB: Can They Ever Get Along?

Well, it looks like the much-talked-about talks between the UNP and the SJB have ended in disaster! After trying (and failing) to form an electoral alliance for the upcoming local government elections, both parties have decided to go their separate ways. Instead of joining forces, the SJB and UNP are set to contest the elections independently. The plan to join hands and fight against the ruling NPP fizzled out because, guess what? The SJB wasn’t interested in contesting under the UNP’s banner.

The Battle Between Premadasa and Wickremesinghe
So, why didn’t the SJB want to team up with the UNP? Well, it’s all about the top dogs. There’s a long-standing rivalry between Sajith Premadasa (SJB leader) and Ranil Wickremesinghe (UNP leader). Premadasa isn’t willing to play second fiddle to Wickremesinghe, and Wickremesinghe certainly isn’t going to hand over the leadership of the UNP anytime soon. It’s like watching two big egos collide! Both leaders have their own factions, and there’s no way they’re going to give up their power for an alliance.

Social Media Drama and Backstabbing
As if the leadership drama wasn’t enough, there’s been plenty of social media attacks. SJB’s National Organizer, Tissa Attanayake, dropped out of the talks, saying he was targeted in a nasty online campaign. Apparently, the inner circle of Premadasa wasn’t too happy about the talks and were determined to stop any chance of a partnership with the UNP. Even within the SJB, there are members like MP Dr. Harsha de Silva who feel left out and undermined. So, no surprises here—more fighting behind the scenes!

History of Drama: Divisions in Sri Lanka’s Politics
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen parties split up in Sri Lanka. Remember the UNP’s major split back in the day? It happened in 1951, when S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike left the UNP and formed the SLFP. Fast forward to the 1990s, and there were even more splits, with leaders like Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamin Dissanayake breaking away to form their own factions. It’s been a pattern, and it looks like the SJB and UNP are just the latest to add to the list of parties struggling to stay united.

The Future: Will They Ever Team Up?
So, what’s next for the SJB and UNP? Well, it’s hard to say. They’ll both go into the local elections separately, but who knows what’ll happen after that? They might have to work together in the future if they want to take on the NPP, but the chances of them ever teaming up properly seem slim. Unless there’s a major shake-up, it looks like the rivalry between Premadasa and Wickremesinghe will continue to keep these two parties at odds. It’s the same old drama, just with new faces!
