Sri Lanka Rejects UN Criticism, Promises Economic Recovery

Sri Lanka has rejected strong criticism from the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner, Volker Turk. The government stated that although people’s living standards have declined, they will improve as the economy recovers with help from the international community.

On Friday, the Sri Lankan government informed foreign diplomats about its stance on the UN report. The government acknowledged that cuts in social protection, healthcare, and education, as well as a decline in food and nutrition data, were unfortunate effects of the debt crisis and the necessary financial restrictions for economic recovery.

The report, which highlights economic issues, is available on the UNHRC website and will be presented in Geneva on September 9. The Foreign Ministry has responded by briefing diplomats and posting a detailed statement on its website to address the concerns raised in the UN report.

A nine-page document given to member countries explained that Sri Lanka has managed to overcome social and political challenges and stabilize its economy after the recent crisis. It also clarified the government’s position on the issues highlighted in the UN report
