By President Ranil Wickremesinghe has told his ministers that the presidential election will be held first, that is between September 17 and October 16 but it is still not known for sure if he will be contesting the election for sure.
The talks to patch up differences between the SJB and the UNP are still continuing and it is speculated that Wicramasinghe may even step back and give room to the SJB if he can’t make it to the top slot.
Surprisingly even the Rajapakshas may support such a move as it would be advantageous for them to support an SJB –UNP alliance rather than paving the way for an NPP lead government led by Anuuara Kumara Dissanayaka comeing in to power.
Recently Mahinda Rajapaksha commented that he is not aware of the talks between Basil Rajapksaha and Ranil Wickramasinghe.Many speculate a split in the Rajapaksha family after the recent meeting held in Anuradapura which was poorly attended.
