By The government has named Sonali Samarasinghe, wife of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge in a surprise move .The appointment has been mad at a time when a controversy has erupted on releasing suspects on the murder of Lasantha. She had to flee Sri Lanka to the United States after threats to her life after Wickrematunge’s assassination.
Sonali Samarasinghe has been offered the the post of Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York.
Foreign Ministry sources confirmed the decision has been made to offer her the post , how ever the reason to offer such post is not known. Also It is not clear if she has accepted the appointment.
The government is in the process of finalising the list of appointees to head Sri Lanka’s Missions abroad and among them are no carrier diplomats. A number of diplomats were called back in December
