Sajith vs. Harsha: Is the SJB Headed for a Major Political Split?

Sri Lanka’s opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is facing a serious leadership struggle, with growing pressure to either align with the United National Party (UNP) or solidify his independent stance. Critics argue that he lacks a clear political strategy, while some believe his leadership position is weakening. Meanwhile, at the grassroots level, there are calls for a combined opposition list to strengthen electoral chances, further complicating Premadasa’s position.

Harsha De Silva vs. Sajith: A Battle for Colombo?

The latest crack in the party emerged with the split involving prominent MP Harsha de Silva. De Silva had positioned himself as the ideal candidate for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Colombo District leadership. However, Premadasa retained the post for himself, dismissing suggestions of internal conflict.

“I have no issue with Harsha, and my decision has nothing to do with him,” Premadasa told journalists. But De Silva struck a different tone, stating, “I am the most suitable person for the SJB Colombo District leadership, but I don’t intend to hunt for posts. One cannot obtain positions by force.”

Internal Tensions Rise

Party insiders suggest that Premadasa’s decision to keep the Colombo leadership signals an attempt to consolidate power amid growing dissent. However, political analysts warn that sidelining influential figures like De Silva could backfire. Some speculate that if De Silva and others decide to exit, they may have more to gain than lose, particularly at the local level where alliances are shifting rapidly.

The Pressure to Merge with UNP

Adding to Premadasa’s woes, there is increasing pressure for the SJB to merge with the UNP to form a united opposition against the ruling party. But a potential merger could further alienate key figures within the SJB, potentially triggering more defections.

What’s Next for the SJB?

With internal divisions becoming public, the question remains: Can Sajith Premadasa maintain control, or is the SJB on the brink of a major political shake-up? As the party faces mounting challenges, all eyes are on how Premadasa navigates this high-stakes leadership battle.
