Political circles speculate that a grand alliance comprising the Sri Lanka Freedom Party of former President Maithripala Sirisena and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa’s affiliates will soon join the President. Several small parties representing minority identities may also join the alliance, while parliamentarians allied with Dulles Alahapperuma are undecided, as they feel they could use this situation to their advantage and become a formidable force within the opposition of the next parliament.
There is a high possibility of Ranil Wickremesinghe strategically distancing himself from the Rajapaksa clan. However, a group of lotus group parliamentarians have said that this needs to be done in a planned manner that would ensure the safety of the Rajapaksas from charges made against them.
The JVP and its allied parties are viewing the grand alliance as a means to portray themselves as different from the others and to launch a strong anti-corruption campaign.
