MP Nalin Hewage of the NPP said a person by the name of Rohini Kaviratne has changed her name to Rohini Lamaratne.There was only on Rohini Kaviratna whom ever one knew in Parliament .
“I saw an advertisement in the papers to this effect,” said Hewage refering to a comment made by her on allocateing 100 million for a railway project to transport vegetables.
Hewage was trying to imply that Rohini Kaviratna had made a childish comment .Hewage has notaries track record of using insult as a weapon.
MP Harsha de Silva was quick to raise a point of order, stating that MP Hewage has insulted MP Kaviratne.
“You cannot insult a fellow MP as per standing orders,” Dr. de Silva said.
“Hewage took to his defence :I did not refer to the MP but only said one Rohini Kaviratne has changed her name to Rohini Lamaratne,”
Parliament decided to expunge a remark made by Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage regarding SJB MP Rohini Kaviratne from the official Hansard.
The controversy escalated until Chief Government Whip Minister, Nalinda Jayathissa, intervened by apologising on behalf of the deputy minister. Jayathissa confirmed that, in the interest of upholding respectful and accurate parliamentary discourse, the contentious remark would indeed be removed from the Hansard.
