Ranil Wickremesinghe has won the Presidential election and is to be sworn in soon. The new President requested that he would like to have the swearing-in ceremony in the parliament itself.
Ranil Wickremesinghe obtained 134 votes while Dullas Alahapperume obtained 82 votes and Anura Kumara Dissanayake has obtained 3 votes.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the JVP said that although many had pledged to vote for Dullas Alahapperume have not done so and he suspects vote buying and undue influence.
Ranil Wickremesinghe called on Dullas Alahapperuma and Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to work together in a new manner.
“The people are not asking us for old politics. I request Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and other opposition parties including former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena to work together,” Wickremesinghe said.
“We were divided for the last 48 hours. That period is now over. We have to work together now,” he added.
In a hard-hitting speech, leader of the opposition, Sajith Premadasa said that he has no regrets of supporting Dullas Alahapperume.
Leader of the House and MP Dinesh Gunawardena is tipped to be appointed as the Prime Minister.
