President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the Supreme Court should have consulted the Elections Commission before making a ruling about appointing an Acting IGP.
He mentioned that he has spoken to the Speaker and advised him to meet with the Chief Justice to discuss how to resolve the matter.
Legal experts say that there is no provision for the Chief Justice to overrule a specific court order. The President also noted that he has discussed the matter with the Mahanayaka Theros but did not reveal the advice he had received.
He cautioned civil society organizations not to interfere again, as it will complicate matters. The President described the issue as a “land mine ” and emphasized the need to decide whether to defuse it or let it explode.
The President stated that holding elections on time is his priority; however, many have pointed out that appointing an Acting IGP is not a hindrance to holding elections on schedule.
The President also mentioned that the anti-drug drive has had to be halted due to the unresolved issue regarding the IGP, indicating that Deshabandu Thenakoon is urgently needed to move forward.
Meanwhile, President’s Counsel Saliya Pieries stated that Deshabandu Thenakoon could be charged with contempt of court if he functions as the IGP.
