Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya has been elected as the new President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), bringing with him a wealth of experience and a stellar reputation in the legal fraternity.
A seasoned legal professional, Amarasuriya previously served as the Secretary of BASL and has built a formidable appellate court practice, specializing in public law, commercial litigation, property disputes, taxation, and banking law. His sharp legal acumen and leadership have earned him influential roles across both the state and private sectors.
Beyond the courtroom, Amarasuriya’s impact is far-reaching. He serves on several key boards and committees, including the Sri Lanka Accounting and Auditing Standards Monitoring Board, the Standing Committee of Legal Studies of the University Grants Commission, and as a Council Member of the University of Colombo. He also represents Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and plays a key role as an Executive Committee Member of LAWASIA.
Impressive Track Record
His impressive career trajectory includes past appointments as a Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, a Member of the Council of Legal Education, and a Board Member of the Sri Lanka National Arbitration Centre. He also served as the Immediate Past President of the Alumni Association of the University of Colombo, further cementing his contributions to academia and the legal field.
Trailblazer
A product of the University of Colombo’s Faculty of Law, Amarasuriya is an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and a Fellow Member of both the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka. His global exposure includes executive education at the Harvard Kennedy School, and in 2022, he was honored as an AFGG – Raisina Fellow.
His leadership and excellence have not gone unnoticed—he received the CIMA Star Gold Award in 2013 as the most outstanding CIMA member under 40 and was recognized as a CIMA-LMD Trailblazer in 2021.
Adding another milestone to his already distinguished career, on January 31, 2024, Amarasuriya was appointed to the Governing Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), further solidifying his influence in shaping Sri Lanka’s legal and financial landscape.
