In a strategic move to enhance aviation infrastructure and connectivity in the northern region, Sri Lanka is set to call for expressions of interest (EOI) for the operation of Jaffna International Airport under a public-private partnership (PPP). Nimal Siripala de Silva, the Minister of Shipping and Aviation, confirmed that preparatory work is already in progress, and the EOI process will be initiated shortly.
The Jaffna airport, located in Palaly, has gained international designation and is presently facilitating scheduled flights from India, primarily through smaller turboprop aircraft. To accommodate larger jets, such as the Airbus A320 class, a crucial runway extension is deemed necessary for the airport’s development.
Simultaneously, Sri Lanka is on the verge of finalizing the management contract for the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. Minister de Silva disclosed that a consortium comprising Russian and Indian companies is in line to be awarded the management rights for this airport, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to optimize its aviation network through strategic partnerships. The developments underscore Sri Lanka’s commitment to bolstering its aviation sector and fostering international collaborations for economic growth.
