One Milion New Votes

All most one million new voters will influence the outcome of the results of the coming elections. These youngsters will be eligible to vote for the first time.

“There are around 200,000 voters registered as new voters every year. We last had elections in 2019 and from then, there are around one million new voters registered,” Saman Sri Ratnayake, Commissioner General of Elections said speaking to the media.

Approximately l 17. 1 million voters are eligible to vote in the next presidential poll.

The Presidential elections will be held after September 17, and Foreign Minister  Ali Sabri speculates that the elections will be held on a Saturday late  October while leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka speculates that the elections will be held late September.

The Election Commission on Tuesday (16) said it will declare the date of the election before the end of this month. The Commission will have powers to announce the poll from July 17, according to the constitution. However, it seems that the Election Commissioner is in no mood to declare the date of the election sometime soon.

The Election Commissioner has the capability of announcing the date of the forthcoming presidential election at the first possible opportunity and lessening the tensions that are building up around the elections.

Political commenters point out that this gives an undue advantage to Ranil Wickramasingha who could use is office to seek undue advantage over the other contestants.
