The President made this statement during a progress review meeting convened by the Ministry of Energy.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the Ministry of Energy’s progress review meeting yesterday (15).
During the meeting, he emphasized that, like many other nations where the energy sector plays a critical role, Sri Lanka has also prioritized its energy sector. He highlighted the Ministry of Energy’s revenue-generating capacity, noting that increased earnings have led to societal concerns regarding potential irregularities.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling the mandate entrusted to him by the electorate, who voted in this Presidential election with high expectations. He emphasized that the public’s embrace of a new political tradition reflects their discontent with the old political culture, ongoing economic challenges, and dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of public service.
The President emphasized that the public holds the belief that corruption, fraud, and mismanagement have contributed to the country’s economic collapse, and that the mandate they have provided is aimed at addressing these issues. He committed to safeguarding the trust placed in him by the people to eradicate corruption and fraud within the public sector, urging public servants to diligently fulfill their responsibilities. Furthermore, the President asserted that public wealth must be protected with the same reverence as religious property, declaring that no individual has the legitimate right to subject that wealth to fraudulent or corrupt practices.

He expressed his readiness to take all necessary measures to achieve this objective. The President underscored the importance of public servants acting with responsibility and accountability to align with the structure, goals, and expectations of the mandate. He further stated that his political leadership team is prepared to provide the essential guidance to facilitate this endeavor.

A thorough evaluation was conducted on current and upcoming projects in the energy sector, focusing on how to meet its objectives over the next three years while also exploring short-term and long-term relief options for the public. This significant discussion included contributions from key figures such as Professor Udayanga Hemapala, Secretary of the Ministry of Energy; Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya, Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board; Engineer K.G.R.F. Comester, General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board; and Janaka Rajakaruna, Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, alongside various officials from the Ministry of Energy.
