Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s Finance Minister since May 2019, stands as a pivotal figure in the country’s economic landscape. She worked with the BBC World Service and Price Waterhouse in London, bringing a global perspective to her subsequent roles. Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2006, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the party’s national spokesperson in 2010.

Sitharaman’s ministerial journey began in 2014 when she was appointed Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge). Her tenure saw significant efforts to boost India’s trade and industry sectors. In September 2017, she made history as India’s second female Defence Minister, following Indira Gandhi.

 

She was the first woman appointed as the full-time Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. Earlier, Indira Gandhi had held finance as an additional portfolio for a short duration when she was the prime minister of India.
