Reports have surfaced suggesting that controversial businessman Nimal Perera is willing to testify in legal proceedings against Namal Rajapaksa.
While in opposition, the JVP revealed that Namal Rajapaksa received money from two companies—’NR Projects’, a Netherlands-based firm, and ‘Aspen Medical’, an Australian company—through Nimal Perera. These payments were allegedly connected to the construction of the Nuwara Eliya and Hambantota hospitals.
Wasantha Samarasinghe, the former Convenor of Voice Against Corruption and now a minister, previously disclosed that this fraud came to light during investigations into a complaint they filed regarding the Krrish deal, for which Namal Rajapaksa is now indicted in the high courts.
Samarasinghe stated that NR Projects, a Netherlands company, deposited €4.33 million, and Aspen Medical, an Australian company, deposited US$ 555,000 into Nimal Perera’s Singapore account.
There has also been controversy surrounding Nimal Perera’s dealings with the Colombo Stock Exchange. A few years ago, it was revealed that he owned stocks worth around two billion rupees.
Despite praising Namal Rajapaksa as an energetic leader, it later emerged that Nimal Perera turned state witness in the Krissh-Rugby donation scandal.
Nimal Perera was once a close business ally of businessman Dhamika Perera, but their partnership eventually fell apart.
Political observers believe that testifying against Namal Rajapaksa will not protect Nimal Perera from further scrutiny, as he too has many questions to answer regarding his business dealings, which are now under investigation.
