The competitive buying of paddy by large scale merchants and the government will result in further increases of rice prices said the small scale millers association.
The small scale millers who held a press conference said that although the government has imposed a fifty rupee certified price per kilo of paddy currently paddy is been purchased at prices between 55-60 rupees per kilo.
The small scale millers complained that they would not be able to comply with government price controls.
It seems that the consumer will have to pay much more for rice in the near future.
The Minister of Agriculture Mahndananda Aluthgamage said that the government is will to subsidize in order to maintain the controlled price for rice .Critiques question the sustainability of such subside.
