Sri Lanka’s sugar factories are producing more ethanol than the country needs, and officials are looking for ways to export the surplus.
The officials suggested that the government issue alcohol production licenses to sugar factories so that the ethanol can be used to make alcohol. They also said that the country needs to increase its sugar production to 600,000 metric tons in order to meet demand.
The officials also said that there is a good demand abroad for Sri Lankan alcohol products, but that the market has not been able to expand due to weaknesses in the standards. They said that the government needs to take steps to improve the quality of Sri Lankan alcohol products in order to boost exports.
