President Ranil Wickremesinghe may appoint a few more Cabinet ministers during the budget period, is the latest political rumor.
Former minister Channa Jayasumana recently said that as many of the lotus groupings are disgruntled that they have not got ministerial portfolios they may vote against the budget in revolt.
There is widespread public discontent on appointing more ministers while the economy is on its knees.
The president can increase the size of the Cabinet to 30 according to the Constitution while fifteen have been already appointed.
Earlier, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) protagonist Basil Rajapaksha requested the president to swear in the remaining number of ministers to run the government.
SLPP MPS Pavithra Wanniarachchi, C.B. Ratnayake, and S.M. Chandrasena are tipped to get ministerial posts. Besides, MP Jeewan Thondaman of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Duminda Dissanayake are tipped to receive cabinet portfolios. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarians may also cross over in order to receive ministerial portfolios. Appointing a jumbo cabinet is a massive strain on the crippled economy but also a serious erosion of public confidence in fair governance, commented many political observers who spoke to lanka news line.
