Sri Lanka’s animal husbandry sector is suffering from a shortage of animal feed and the cost of importing mazes has dramatically increased.
The government has had to spend 9.6 billion rupees for maize imports this year while the shortage of fertilizer for maize is still not under the control In 2020, maize production for Sri Lanka was 313 thousand tonnes. Maize production of Sri Lanka increased from 26 thousand tonnes in 2001 to 313 thousand tonnes in 2020 growing at an average annual rate of 16.30%.
