The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), at its Central Committee meeting, decided today not to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential election, but to field its own candidate instead. The party will decide on its candidate later.
Central Committee member Gamini Lokuge said that the majority at the meeting said that it would be disadvantage for the party to support Ranil Wickramasingha because such move would further create divisions within the party. How ever there is a possibility of certain lotus heavy weights to cross over to Ranil Wikramasinha in the next few days while some others will support him covertly.
All what is happening indicates that the lotus grouping is deeply divided on how to face the coming presidential elections.
