The self-made politician Wimal Weerawansa is holding talks with all parties in an attempt to secure his power base in the next parliamentary election.
He and his colleagues first held talks with Sajith Premadasa, but before reaching any conclusion, he moved on to talks with others.
Now, Weerawansa and his team are in talks with the Freedom People’s Congress (FPC) led by Dullas Alahapperuma at the Communist Party headquarters.
According to reports, the two parties have discussed economic policy, foreign policy, including regional power balance, political reforms, including the proposed implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, and the creation of a social democratic structure.
The meeting was attended by several controversial politicians, including G.L. Peiris, Dilan Perera, Nalaka Godahewa, Charitha Herath, and Channa Jayasumana from the FPC, and Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, D.E.W. Gunasekera, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, G. Weerasinghe (General Secretary of the Communist Party), and Gevindu Kumarasinghe from the Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya.
After the meeting with the FPC, Weerawansa and his team met with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) at its office in Battaramulla.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Vijitha Herath, and K.D. Lalkantha greeted their former colleague Weerawansa to discuss how they could tackle the “power-grabbing game.”
There is a strong possibility that Weerawansa will also hold talks with Ranil Wickremesinghe and the United National Party (UNP) once he becomes acceptable to the other parties.
