Reading into the statement made by President Ranil Wickremesinghe a Presidential Election will be held in 2024 many senior politicians speculate that instead a Parliamentary election may be held at short notice.
A senior politician when contacted by Lanka News Line said ”He is a strategic politician and knows what do when”
The politician aligned with the UNP who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that as the Presidient is well aware of the difficulty of winning the Presidential election at this point he may opt for general elections as he has his term anyhow and has nothing to lose.
Any party that comes in to power has no other option than working with Wickramsigha and within this process, he could muster power to strengthen the UNP and then face a Presidiental election pointed out the politician.
President Wickremesinghe is supposed to have said that a General Election is inevitable if the Government’s main coalition, the SLPP continues to threaten to hold the President to ransom, citing numbers in Parliament. However now it is evident that the reift between the President and the SLPP is nothing more than a ‘storm in the tea cup’
Parliamentarian Nimal Lanza said if the SLPP is unwilling to work with the President they could defeat the forthcoming budget and force the President to call for a snap General Election.
