A Legendary Actress Fights Cancer with Courage: Susanth Chandramali’s Legacy
The renowned actress, Susanth Chandramali, has sadly passed away. After a long battle with cancer, she left us at the age of 61. For several years, she had been fighting the disease while undergoing continuous treatment in the hospital.
Born as Abeyasiri Narayana Susanth Chandramali Wanigaratne on February 21, 1964, in Mulkirigala, Hambantota, she married Kumar Liyanage on March 12, 1991. The couple had a daughter, Thisuri Yuvanika Maduma Liyanage, who has also gained fame as an actress, winning multiple awards for her outstanding performances.
In 2020, Susanth was diagnosed with cancer, and she fought the disease with remarkable courage and determination. She underwent treatments relentlessly to combat the progression of the disease. Despite suffering for five years, she faced her illness with unwavering strength, undergoing treatment with hope and perseverance. It was during this treatment journey that she sadly passed away.
Suantha Chandramali’s career began in 1986 when she made a significant contribution to Sri Lankan arts. Not only did she capture the hearts of fans with her exceptional performances in television dramas, but she also won the admiration of cinema lovers through her remarkable acting in films.
Her cinematic debut came in 2000 with the film “Saroja,” directed by Somaratna Disanayake, where she portrayed a nurse. Among the films that saw her talent shine were “Jaya Pita Jaya,” “Ran Kevita,” and “Nidahase Piya DS.” She also acted in films like “Sumeda,” “One Shot,” “Udugama Yamaya,” “Nidi Yahana Kelabayi,” “Ran Kevita 2,” “Pravegaya,” “Veeravarna,” and “Punchi Apit Baya Na Dan.”
Her iconic roles were in the films where she portrayed powerful characters like a teacher in “One Shot,” the mother of Suran in “Ran Kevita,” Sandhya in “Jaya Pita Jaya,” and Ayesha’s mother in “Veeravarna.” In the movie “Nidahase Piya DS,” she portrayed the character of Moly Dunuvela, winning the audience’s affection.
Chandramali became a household name for her unforgettable roles in popular television dramas like “Charulatha,” “Sujatha,” and “Kande Gedara.” She also performed in several other renowned TV shows such as “Muthupalasa,” “Denuwara Manike,” and “Girikula,” to name just a few.
Her versatility in television drama was displayed through her varied characters in shows like “Ahas,” “Anantha,” “Ayomi (2021),” “Chakrandi,” “Ehpilimak Yata,” “Gamanaya Ya,” “Ganga saha Nissanka,” “Hima Varusa,” and many more.
Chandramali’s role in the TV drama “Kande Gedara” as Charulatha became a massive hit, establishing her as one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic television actresses.
In addition to her acting career, Susanth Chandramali ventured into politics and contested in the 2009 Southern Provincial Council election under the United People’s Freedom Alliance. However, she was not successful in securing a seat at the Provincial Council.
