Easter Sunday: Justice Delayed

The Easter Sunday attack in 2019 remains one of Sri Lanka’s darkest moments, but many unanswered questions still surround it. Families of the victims continue to demand justice, yet investigations have faced significant delays. The new government must act transparently to uncover the full truth and hold those responsible accountable.

One of the biggest mysteries is the extent of foreign involvement. Former President Maithripala Sirisena has stated that there was an Indian connection to the attack. However, the exact nature of this link remains unclear, and further investigation is needed to determine its significance.

Several political figures have been accused of involvement, but they have all denied any wrongdoing. The Rajapaksa family, former intelligence chief Suresh Sally, and Sivanesathurei Chandrakanthan (also known as Pillayan) have rejected allegations linking them to the attack. Despite these denials, concerns remain about whether political or intelligence agencies failed to act on prior warnings.

Foreign Intelligence involment

Adding to the complexity, Asad Mawlana, a former media secretary to Pillayan, has made serious claims regarding foreign intelligence involvement and political interference. However, his credibility has been questioned, raising doubts about the reliability of his statements. While some of his allegations align with existing suspicions, others argue that they lack solid evidence.

The delays in the investigation have caused increasing frustration among victims’ families, who feel justice is being denied. The new government has a responsibility to address these concerns and take decisive action.Althogh assurances have been given stiil the public have not been made aware of the prgress of the investigatios and there is a uneasiness among the victim families.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the government should:

Conduct an independent investigation into all aspects of the attack, including potential foreign involvement.

Review and disclose intelligence failures that may have led to the attack.

Investigate whether political figures played any role in facilitating or failing to prevent the attack.

Hold security and intelligence officials accountable for any negligence.

Provide regular updates to the public on the progress of the investigation.

Deliver justice to the victims and their families without political interference.

The people of Sri Lanka deserve clear answers, and the government must ensure that justice is served without delay.
