The Attorney General has directed the Police Inspector General to charge Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General Deshabandu Tennakoon with aiding and abetting those who attacked peaceful protesters at Galle Face on May 9 last year. The Attorney General has also instructed the Police to name 33 other suspects, including former minister Johnston Fernando and State Minister Sanath Nishantha.
If these individuals are found guilty of their alleged involvement in the attack on peaceful protesters, they should be held accountable for their actions and face appropriate consequences under the law. The fact that SDIG Tennakoon is one of the front-runners to become the next IGP after the retirement of IGP Wickramaratne adds another layer of complexity to the situation. It remains to be seen how this will affect his candidacy and whether he will ultimately face charges for his alleged role in the attack.
