Deshabandhu Tennakoon Planning to Surrender?

Former IGP Deshabandhu Tennakoon Evades Arrest Amid Ongoing Search

Attempt to Surrender Postponed

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandhu Tennakoon was reportedly planning to get himself hospitalized before surrendering to the police through a lawyer. However, sources indicate that securing admission to a hospital has proven difficult due to the existing arrest warrant against him. Initially, there was speculation that he would surrender on March 3rd, but this now appears to have been postponed. Meanwhile, police search teams are under pressure to locate the former IGP, who was relieved of his duties.

Legal Advice and Police Search Efforts

According to a source close to Tennakoon, he has been advised that evading arrest any further would not be beneficial. Even his personal security officer is unaware of his whereabouts. The police continue their search efforts, having already visited his residences in Hokandara and Giriulla, but they have yet to locate him.

Government and Media Reactions

Responding to questions from journalists, the Media Minister stated, “The police are looking for the former IGP. We can only ask him to surrender because it is not good for the police to chase after a former IGP so much. It is shameful.”

Meanwhile, social media activists have commented on Tennakoon’s apparent fear of mistreatment if remanded. This stems from past human rights violation allegations, where he was accused of rubbing Sidhalepa balm on a suspect’s private parts and physically assaulting him.

Arrest Warrant and Criminal Charges

The Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an arrest warrant for Tennakoon on Friday, following a police request. Since then, he has disappeared. The charges against him include conspiracy to commit murder. Additionally, a foreign travel ban has been imposed.

Involvement in Weligama Shooting Incident

The arrest warrant relates to an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred in front of a hotel in Weligama, Matara, on December 31, 2023. A police officer was killed in the shootout by fellow officers. Questions have been raised about the involvement of Colombo Crimes Division officers in the Weligama incident.

Other Officers Evading Arrest

Alongside Tennakoon, the court also ordered the arrest of eight others, including Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Colombo Crimes Division, Anslam de Silva, who is also currently absconding.
