The surge in burglaries and other crime-related incidents within the city limits of Colombo has prompted an increase in CCTV sales, according to sellers in Colombo Fort. Nimal Athuraliya, who sells CCTV on the Ikman classified website, mentioned, “People are scared, and they are opting for CCTV as a precaution.”
Noordeen Bahi, a seller of CCTV and accessories, noted, “Customers are now opting for sophisticated CCTV, and many are looking for systems with night vision capability and better quality.”
Police officer C. I. Chandra Prema stated, “Burglars are one step ahead of technology; they mask themselves with full-face helmets and sometimes even disconnect electricity.”
Crime investigators emphasize that CCTV should be used in combination with alertness and common sense to effectively prevent burglaries.Deterrence: The presence of CCTV cameras acts as a deterrent, but it does not guarantee prevention. Vigilance and alertness are crucial to deterring potential intruders.
Monitoring: Actively monitoring CCTV footage, especially in real-time, allows for the timely detection of suspicious activities or potential security threats.
Immediate Response: In cases of unusual activity captured by CCTV cameras, an immediate response is crucial. This may involve contacting law enforcement or security personnel or taking appropriate action based on the situation.
Common Sense: Basic security practices, such as locking doors and windows, using proper lighting, and being cautious about sharing security information, are essential. Common-sense measures significantly contribute to overall security.
Alertness to Surroundings: Remaining aware of surroundings is vital. This includes being attentive to unfamiliar people or vehicles, strange noises, or any unusual occurrences.
Integration with Other Security Measures: CCTV systems work best when integrated into a comprehensive security plan. Combining them with other security measures, such as access control systems, alarms, and physical security, enhances overall protection.
Regular Maintenance: Ensuring that CCTV cameras are well-maintained and functioning correctly is crucial. Regular checks and maintenance help prevent technical issues that could compromise security.
C. I. Chandraprema emphasized, “Remember that technology is a tool, and its effectiveness depends on how it’s used. No security system, including CCTV, can replace the need for human vigilance and common sense. By combining technology with proactive measures and alertness, individuals can create a more robust and effective security environment for their homes or businesses.
