The current rate of breast cancer is comparatively low in Sri Lanka, but the increasing trend is alarming according to a recent study carried out recently. Saddharma Weerakoon , Malvige Amila Suranaga, Janaki Vidanapathirana, Upuli Perera studied the Cancer incidence data published in National Cancer Registry, Sri Lanka (NCR-SL) from 2005 to 2019 and point out that breast cancer among females was 18 .4 per 100 000 population in 2005, while it had increased to was 33 .5 per 100 000 population in 2019.
The National Cancer Control Program says that every day, 12 cases of breast cancer are reported from Sri Lanka.
Specialist Dr. Hasareli Fernando confirmed that there has been a rapid increase in the number of breast cancer patients in Sri Lanka in the past two decades.
