Six police teams under the Southern Province SDIG are meticulously investigating the deadly shooting incident in Beliatta that claimed five lives yesterday. While no arrests have been made yet, authorities are pursuing multiple leads, including potential links to an underworld figure operating from Dubai.
The victim, Samantha Perera, was reportedly involved in long-standing disputes with Koskoda Suji, a Dubai-based individual linked to criminal activities. Police spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa confirmed this line of inquiry alongside other avenues of investigation.
Adding a layer of complexity to the case are ongoing internal party conflicts within Perera’s political party regarding parliamentary representation. Rev. Vediyagama Wimalathissa, an advisor to the party, made a statement holding the current government responsible for Perera’s death, further amplifying the political dimension of the incident.
However, Rev. Athuralye Rathana, another party figure, recently secured his parliamentary seat after legal proceedings, highlighting the internal struggles for political power within the same party.
It is crucial to emphasize that all statements and leads remain under investigation, and no conclusions have been drawn regarding the motive or perpetrators of the shooting. Police urge the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to proceed unhindered.
The deceased, four of whom were killed at the scene and one who succumbed to injuries at the hospital, are remembered by their families and friends. Respecting their privacy and avoiding insensitive speculation is paramount during this difficult time.
