Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam has directed the newly-appointed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Rohan Premaratne, to ensure the prompt response of the police against individuals spreading distorted religious teachings in an insensitive manner.
It is crucial to note that many civil society activists have cautioned against handling this matter recklessly in the courtroom. The debate on distorted versions of doctrines or religions might not find the most suitable resolution within legal proceedings.
As reported by the Sunday Times, the AG emphasizes proactive measures, urging investigation agencies to act upon awareness of such incidents rather than waiting for formal complaints. Rushing into situations with assumptions based on mere complaints may be unwise, given the numerous court rulings on the misuse of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICPR).
Several prominent individuals and organizations express deep concern over the continued abuse of laws, including the ICCPR Act, No. 56 of 2007, and its selective application, which violates freedom of expression in Sri Lanka. This concern heightened following the arrest of comedian Nathasha Edirisooriya and SLVlog YouTube Channel owner Bruno Diwakara under the ICCPR Act without access to bail.
On the flip side, addressing unorthodox comments on religion poses a challenge for law enforcement due to the potential public commotions that ensue. The Maha Nayaka Theras have urged the government to swiftly enact legislation to combat distortions of Buddhism
‘Avalokitheswara Bodhisattva’
Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Dileepa Peiris informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that Mahinda Kodithuwakku, the self-proclaimed ‘Avalokitheswara Bodhisattva,’ arrested on charges of distorting Buddhism, spent Rs 1.5 million in the first 15 days in Sri Lanka.
The controversial saffron-robed monk, identifying as ‘Vishwa Buddha,’ has been expelled from the Ramanna Maha Nikaya and the monkhood. The Mahanayake Thera of Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya, Ven. Makulewe Wimalaabhidana Thera communicated this decision to the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs.
