Civil society activists, who had been clamoring for days, shouted in joy upon receiving the news of the minister’s arrest. They stated, “We respect the judiciary.”
The police had faced criticism for taking an extended period to apprehend Keheliya Rambukwella, despite evidence naming him as a suspect. Several civil activists, previously accused, were arrested and brought to court for conducting demonstrations against the former minister.
During the protests, a woman among the demonstrators, who was subsequently arrested, poured a bottle of milk on herself to fulfill a vow. She remarked, “This is a beautiful day, and we are going to celebrate Independence Day because we are independent.”
