Airline Theft Incident Highlights Need for Vigilance Over Hand Luggage
A Chinese passenger accused of stealing branded wristwatches and other valuables from another passenger’s hand luggage on a SriLankan Airlines flight from Dubai to Colombo this week escaped legal action as the victim chose not to pursue a complaint, the Sunday Times has learned.
Victim Recovers Stolen Items, But No Legal Action Taken
The victim discovered several missing items from his overhead compartment luggage and found them in the possession of another passenger. Following standard protocol, SriLankan Airlines contacted local authorities at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). However, as the victim declined to lodge a police complaint, the suspect was allowed to leave the country.
Cabin Crew Warns: This Is Not an Isolated Incident
A flight steward, speaking anonymously, revealed that similar incidents have happened before, often going undetected until after landing, when passengers have already dispersed.
“In a past case, a gem merchant lost valuable gems, but days later, the thief was caught using online surveillance evidence,” the steward said.
He emphasized the importance of passengers checking their luggage frequently and immediately reporting any missing items to cabin staff, who are always ready to assist.
Stay Vigilant: Keep Valuables Secure on Flights
A SriLankan Airlines official advised travelers to be extra cautious, particularly on long-haul flights. He recommended keeping passports, cash, and other valuables in personal possession whenever possible to minimize theft risks.
This incident serves as a reminder for all air travelers to stay alert and safeguard their belongings while flying.
